Demonstration Railroad Operations Assistants
The National Museum of Industrial History is seeking team oriented volunteers willing to work outdoors to assist in the operation of the short (approximately 100 foot) demonstration railway. Primary duties will include keeping the general public out of the way of the moving train (powered by a former Bethlehem Steel narrow gauge diesel locomotive), coupling and uncoupling cars, placing wheel chocks, giving hand signals to the engineer, answering basic questions from visitors, and performing other tasks.
Training will be provided. Safety is paramount and individuals must be able to maintain awareness of their surroundings and immediately communicate any potential dangers to the engineer and those surrounding them.
No experience required. Shifts are flexible but must be committed to in advance. Training opportunities to become the engineer, perform maintenance, and participate in restoration work will also be available. The locomotive will operate the first and third Saturdays of the month April through October.
Volunteers will be assigned to shifts based on their availability and museum needs.
