Holiday Hope Chests

This past holiday season, the Volunteer Center asked school age children, elementary through high school, to find an old shoe box, fill it with items for a homeless or needy child and then wrap it. The Volunteer Center then delivered them to area agencies serving at-risk youth.  Over 3200 were collected!  Participants included: schools, colleges, Brownie Troops, churches, corporations, agencies, day care centers, and various individuals.

If you are interested in participating this holiday season, look at our Youth page, or
contact the Volunteer Center.

Mini Days of Caring

Initiated in 1995 as a spin-off of Day of Caring, this program is a personalized matching of corporate volunteers with United Way member agency projects. In 2006, more than 1052 corporate employees from 9 corporations participated in projects, donating approximately 4734 volunteer hours and saving agencies over $85,401.

In order to serve the whole community, the United Way firmly believes in recruiting volunteers who represent everyone. In 1987, the board of directors of United Way in Lehigh County created Project Blueprint, a unique opportunity for minority volunteers. Project Blueprint, coordinated by the Volunteer Center, recruits African Americans, Latinos and other minorities and places them on boards of directors and committees of voluntary organizations. Project Blueprint has armed United Way and other boards with astute volunteers who can most effectively meet the new and emerging needs of our community.

This six-session leadership development workshop, held every spring and fall, covers topics which relate to board membership and leadership skills including: the roles and responsibilities of a board member, understanding nonprofit finances and legal issues, analyzing communication styles, and how to choose the right board. Board placement is available for participants. Representatives of Lehigh Valley nonprofit agencies will familiarize participants with what is going on in the nonprofit sector in the Valley today and will offer their insights into why they want diversity on their boards.

There is no fee for this program, but registration is required.

"Someone Special" on WAEB/AM
      (on-going program)

Since 1991 the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley, in conjunction with WAEB and Gebhardt's, has been honoring your special volunteers.  The program is coordinated by the Volunteer Center and is free of charge!

The procedure is simple and gives you a special way to say thank you to your very special volunteers.  The complimentary air time will also give you a chance to promote your organization, school or church;

1. Submit names of volunteers along with a brief description of what makes them a special volunteer, for example, participation in special projects/events, years of services, etc.  Please include their address so the Volunteer Center can send them a congratulatory letter. Also, give a brief description of your organization, school or church.

2. Eligibility states that the nominee be a volunteer, not a paid staff person, and must volunteer at an organization, school or church with non-profit status.

3. Each weekday (Monday through Friday) one volunteer will be scheduled for announcement.  The volunteer will be mentioned between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Bobby Gunther Walsh's radio show on WAEB, 790 AM.

4. Your "Someone Special" Volunteer will receive a personalized plaque donated by Gebhardt's. PLEASE BE SURE A REPRESENTATIVE OF YOUR ORGANIZATION, SCHOOL OR CHURCH PICKS UP THE PLAQUE AT GEBHARDT'S (1010 Airport Rd, Allentown PA 18103, 610-439-1984) WITHIN 30 DAYS OF ANNOUNCEMENT.  Plaques are usually ready the end of the first week of each month.

If you are a non-profit agency with IRS registered non-profit status and would like to nominate an individual(s) as a "Someone Special" volunteer, please click here.
